Vinyl Privacy Fences
A vinyl privacy fence is a solid wall of tongue-and-groove boards between vinyl posts, usually 6 feet tall. It blocks the view completely and keeps doing so: the boards lock together, so no gaps open up as the seasons change.
It is the low-upkeep alternative to a cedar privacy fence: no stain, no paint, no rot, and a wash once or twice a year.

Panel Styles and Tops
Solid panels
Full screening from the ground to the top rail, the most common choice for back yards.
Lattice and spindle tops
A solid lower panel with a lattice or spindle band on top: a little light through, most of the privacy kept.
Colors
White, tan and gray, and wood-grain finishes for houses where bright white would stand out.
Built for Wind and Rain
A solid fence catches the wind like a sail. The posts and their footings are what keep it straight.
Posts in concrete
Each post set deep in concrete, with gate posts reinforced with an insert so a swinging gate cannot flex them.
Laid out to the panel
Panels come in set widths, so posts are laid out to the panel, with cut panels at corners and ends. On slopes the panels step down at each post.
Shady fence lines
Damp, shady runs grow a green film; it washes off with soap and water or a mild cleaner.

Height and Neighbors
How tall
Six feet is allowed in most back and side yards around Seattle; taller fences and front yards have their own limits. See height rules by city.
Both sides
Vinyl privacy panels look the same from both sides, which makes them an easy fence to agree on with a neighbor. See boundary fence rules.
Vinyl Privacy Fence Cost
Price per foot
A 6-foot vinyl privacy fence starts around $55 a foot installed on level ground. An 8-foot fence costs about a third more per foot.
What adds to it
Slopes, rocky or rooty ground, gates and old-fence removal (about $15 a foot) each appear on their own line.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a vinyl privacy fence last?
Good-quality vinyl lasts for decades with little care. Check the manufacturer’s warranty on the panels; our workmanship warranty covers the installation.
Will strong wind blow it down?
A solid fence takes a real load in a storm, which is why the posts are set deep in concrete. Wind can still damage any fence; storm damage is a repair, not a defect.
Vinyl or cedar for privacy?
Vinyl starts around $55 a foot and needs no finish; cedar starts around $58, looks natural and is repairable board by board but needs staining. See vinyl fences for the full comparison.
Can a damaged panel be replaced?
Usually: boards and panels slide out and a matching part goes in, provided the system is still made.
