Redmond Fence Contractor
Redmond splits into two kinds of fence job. Up on Education Hill, Grass Lawn and the plateau neighborhoods, it is established subdivisions where the original fences are due for replacement. Down in the valley and around Downtown and Overlake, it is newer townhomes and small-lot houses where every foot of side yard counts.
We build privacy fences, front-yard fences, gates and dog-proof fences across Redmond, and replace and repair older fences — planned around Redmond’s front-yard limit and its strict rules near streams and wetlands.

Redmond Neighborhoods and Ground Conditions
Education Hill and Grass Lawn subdivisions
Houses from the 1970s through the 1990s with cedar fences that have been repaired more than once. Replacement usually keeps the line but upgrades the posts.
Bear Creek, Evans Creek and the Sammamish River
Salmon streams and their wetlands run behind many east Redmond lots. Redmond does not allow fences in critical areas or their buffers, native growth protection areas or greenbelts, so the fence stops at the buffer line.
Townhomes near Downtown and Overlake
Small fenced patios and shared side lines, often under association rules, where a fence has to be compact, tidy and easy to service.

Redmond Fence Rules in Brief
Side and rear setbacks: 6 feet
In the residential and center zones, Redmond’s zoning code allows fences up to 6 feet in rear and side setbacks.
Front yards: 4 feet
“Walls and fences located in any front yard must be 4 feet or less.” Corner lots can have more than one front yard; confirm which yards count on yours.
Measured from existing grade
From existing grade at the base of the fence to the top of the boards, not the posts. A fence on, or within 5 feet of, a retaining wall counts with the wall.
Sight triangles and permits
Corner and driveway sight triangles must be clear between 2 and 8 feet. The building code amendment exempts fences up to 7 feet from permits, though one city web page still says 6 — confirm for anything over 6. Compare cities in fence height rules by city.
Fences That Fit Redmond Homes
Cedar privacy on steel posts
For long back lines on the plateau, a cedar face over steel posts gives the familiar look with posts that do not rot in wet soil.
Dog fences with dig guards
Family neighborhoods mean dogs. Wire dig guards along the bottom and self-closing gates are easy to add while the fence is built — see dog fences.
4-foot front fences
Picket or aluminum front fences that stay within the 4-foot front-yard rule and leave sight triangles clear at the driveway.
Redmond Projects
Replacing 30-year-old cedar
Removal, haul-away and a new fence on the same line, usually with stronger posts than the original. See fence replacement.
Fences behind a buffer
Where a yard backs onto a stream buffer, we set the fence at the buffer edge the city has mapped rather than the property line.
Double gates for trailers and boats
Side-yard double gates on heavier posts for RV and boat access. See driveway gates.
Redmond Fence Questions
How tall can a fence be in Redmond?
In residential zones, 6 feet in side and rear setbacks and 4 feet in any front yard.
Does Redmond require a permit for a 6-foot fence?
No. Redmond’s building code amendment exempts fences not over 7 feet. A fence in a critical area is a separate matter — Redmond does not allow fences there.
Can I fence along the creek at the back of my lot?
Not inside the critical area or its buffer. The fence goes at the buffer edge.
Do you replace fences in Redmond townhome communities?
Yes, to the association’s approved design. See HOA fence approval.
