Custom Wood Fences
Not every yard fits a standard style. A custom fence starts from the property — the house, the slope, the view you want to keep and the one you want to hide — and the design follows from that.
It can be a small change, such as a different top or a wider gate, or a fence drawn from scratch with mixed materials. Either way, it is built with the same posts and framing as our standard fences.

What Can Be Customized
Board layout
Vertical, horizontal, board-on-board or shadowbox; mixed board widths; a solid lower section with an open band above.
Tops and trim
Flat cap and fascia, picture-frame borders, lattice bands, or arched and scalloped tops between posts.
Mixed materials
Cedar with steel posts or a steel frame, metal accents, or wire panels in a wood frame where a view should stay open.
Designed Around the Yard
Slopes and steps
Sections stepped in level runs or racked to follow the ground, and fences built on top of or behind retaining walls.
Gates
Single, double and wide gates, steel-framed gates with wood infill that do not sag, and driveway gates in the same design.
Trees and views
Lower or more open sections where a view matters, taller screens where a neighbor’s window looks in, and space left around tree roots.

Custom Fence Cost
Starting points
A standard 6-foot cedar privacy fence starts around $58 a foot installed and a horizontal cedar fence around $78. A custom design is priced from the drawing: the more trim, framing and fitting it has, the more it adds.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you build a fence from a photo I found?
Usually, yes. We will tell you what it takes to build it here, with the posts and framing our climate needs, and what it costs.
Does a custom fence take longer?
Planning takes a little longer, and some details, such as steel-framed gates, need extra time to make. We give you the timeline with the estimate.
Can a custom design follow my city’s height rules?
Yes, and it often has to: front-yard sections are usually lower, and some cities allow taller fences when the upper part is open. See height rules by city.
