Vinyl Picket Fences
The white picket fence, without the paint. Vinyl pickets keep their color and their crisp edges for years, need only a wash, and never peel or rot at the foot the way painted wood pickets do in our wet winters.
Picket fences are front-yard fences: low, open and friendly, they frame the house and the garden without hiding either.

Picket Styles
Pointed and dog-ear pickets
The traditional profiles, with the pickets standing above the top rail.
Flat-top and scalloped
A flat top under a rail for a tailored look, or pickets cut in a curve between posts.
Spacing
Wider spacing for an open look, closer spacing to keep small dogs in and to give the fence more presence.
Front-Yard Rules and Layout
Height near the street
Front setbacks usually limit fences to around 3 to 4 feet — 4 feet in a Seattle front setback, 4 feet 6 inches in Bellevue’s. Picket fences are made to fit. See height rules by city.
On the right line
A front fence is often near the sidewalk or the right-of-way. We confirm where it can stand before any post goes in.
Side-yard transitions
The picket fence can step up to a vinyl privacy fence along the side of the house, in the same color.

Gates and Care
Matching gates
A picket walk gate with an aluminum frame inside, a self-closing hinge and a latch, so it stays square and shuts on its own.
Upkeep
A wash with soap and water once or twice a year. Keep sprinklers and soil off the bottom rail.
Vinyl Picket Fence Cost
Price per foot
Picket fences are short and open, so they use less material than privacy panels. A 4-foot vinyl privacy fence works out at about $44 a foot in the calculator; a picket fence of the same height usually costs less.
Gates
Each gate is priced on its own line, with its reinforced post and hardware.
A first number
Try “Vinyl” at 4 feet in the fence cost calculator as the upper end, then ask for a measured estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a vinyl picket fence keep my dog in?
A small dog may slip between pickets and a big dog can jump a 4-foot fence. Closer spacing helps; see dog fences for more.
Vinyl or wood pickets?
Vinyl stays white with no paint; cedar pickets start around $36 a foot at 4 feet in the calculator, can be painted any color and repaired board by board, but need care to last.
Is a vinyl picket fence allowed in front yards?
Usually, within the front-setback height limit and off the public right-of-way. HOAs may have their own rules; see HOA approval.
