Faux Wood Vinyl Fences

Faux wood vinyl gives a fence the color and grain of wood with the upkeep of vinyl. The boards are embossed with a wood texture and colored in cedar, brown or gray tones, so the fence sits naturally in a planted yard and never needs stain.

It is for owners who like the look of a cedar fence but not the staining every few years.

Faux Wood Vinyl, Cedar or Composite?

Cedar

The real thing: warm, repairable board by board, about $58 a foot for 6-foot privacy, but it needs stain to keep its color. See cedar fences.

Composite

Wood fiber and plastic boards, heavier and more wood-like up close, from about $85 a foot. See composite fences.

Faux wood vinyl

Lighter and usually less expensive than composite, with no upkeep beyond washing. Up close it reads as vinyl more than wood.

Things to Know

Darker colors and sun

Dark vinyl absorbs more heat than white. Manufacturers make their darker colors for it; follow their specifications and check the color warranty before choosing.

Keep the product name

Colors and textures differ between systems, so matching a repair later is far easier when you know exactly what was installed.

Faux Wood Vinyl Cost

Compared with white vinyl

A 6-foot white or tan vinyl privacy fence starts around $55 a foot installed. Wood-grain finishes cost more than plain colors; how much depends on the system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does faux wood vinyl fade?

All colors change a little in years of sun; good systems use UV-stable color layers to keep it slow and even. The manufacturer’s warranty says how much they allow.

Does it look like real wood?

From across the yard, often yes. Up close the texture is more regular than real cedar.

How do I clean it?

The same as any vinyl fence: soap and water or a mild cleaner once or twice a year.
